Is F1 or F1b Goldendoodles Better?
You’ll often see Goldendoodles classified by generations like F1, F1b, and F2. These labels can be confusing. F1 generally refers to a direct cross between a purebred Golden Retriever and a purebred Poodle. An F1b is typically the result of breeding an F1 Goldendoodle back to a Poodle (or occasionally back to a Golden Retriever).
F1 Goldendoodles
• Genetic Makeup: ~50% Poodle and ~50% Golden Retriever.
• Coat: Can vary significantly—from straight to wavy or curly. Shedding can also vary but is often moderate.
• Allergen Level: They can be somewhat low-shedding but not guaranteed to be hypoallergenic.
F1b Goldendoodles
• Genetic Makeup: Often ~75% Poodle and ~25% Golden Retriever (if bred back to a Poodle).
• Coat: More consistent in being wavy or curly. Typically lower shedding and more likely to be allergy-friendly.
• Allergen Level: Often better for those with allergies due to higher Poodle genetics.
Which Is Better?
It depends on your priorities:
• Allergies or minimal shedding: F1b is generally recommended.
• Classic Golden traits: Some prefer F1 for a 50/50 mix. They may have a slightly more “Retriever-like” personality.
Neither generation is universally “better.” Each has advantages. If you want the highest chance of a low-shedding or hypoallergenic coat, choose an F1b. If you’re comfortable with potentially moderate shedding and want an even blend of Golden Retriever and Poodle traits, an F1 could be ideal.
