  • I kennel train all of my dogs. I want them to have a place that I can put them when I do not want to watch them. This can also become a den for your dog, and they will love to go in to get away from you too! Dogs do not like to poop or pee where they sleep so buy a larger kennel but section it off so your puppy only has room to stand and turn around in it. When they are just learning I will put a towel or cheap dog bed in their kennel.

  • Pawtree Pet food.

I feed “Turkey and sweet potatoes” and “White Fish & Borwn Rice.”

If I have not already, I will provide you with a link to create a customer account and order it online. It is made from only the very best ingredients and made in the USA. I do ask all puppy owners to feed this food for the Health Guarantee that I provide.

I have researched dog foods extensively. Pawtree has cut down on gas, they eat less and poop less because their bodies can use more of the fuel. I have also noticed that my dog's ears don’t bother them as often. Ear infections have definitely gone down.

8-12 weeks : Growing puppies should be fed 2-4 feedings a day. Food should be unmoistened. They have been eating on this schedule at my house.

3-6 months : Sometime during this period, decrease feedings from 2x a day. A pupuppy should be losing it’s potbelly and pudginess by 12 weeks. If she/he is still rolly polly at this age, continue to feed puppy size portions until body type matures.

6-12 months: Feed 1-2x daily. Spaying or Neutering lowers energy requirements slightly.

After Age 1: Most owners feed adult dogs 2 half portions a day.

There’s a saying in canine feeding. Watch the dog, not the dish. Body condition, not the amount eaten or left in the bowl, should determine portion sizes. Portion sizes depend on individual metabolism and body type, and nutritional requirements vary from dog to dog. If your puppy occasionally skips a meal or picks at food, don’t worry. It could mean she/he is ready to eliminate a feeding or that you have given her/him too much, in which case simply reduce the quantity of food.

I feed my puppies twice daily. In the mornings between 7-8 am, they can eat as much as they want. I give them a bowl of food and they have about 15 minutes to eat. After that, I pick it up and put it away until later in the day. My second feeding usually happens between 3:00-5:30. They get a bowl of food again, and can eat as much as they’d like in about 15 minutes time.

No food after 6:00 and no water after 7:00 aid in potty training.

  • Like human babies, puppies start out needing many small meals a day. Most, but not all, dogs finish meals quickly. To discourage picky habits, feed at regular times in regular amounts and do not leave food down for more than 10 to 20 minutes.

  • Every puppy I have ever trained I have followed the protocol detailed below because they learn very, very quickly that nighttime is not the time to play at our house. Nor is it the time to make noise!

From the moment I bring my puppy home play play play and build rapport with your puppy so that they know they are safe with you.

Every puppy will be scared the first few nights alone without his/her siblings. This is the first night he/she has been alone. Do not get soft on me here, be strong even though it will tug at your heart strings.

I quit feeding my puppy at 5:00-6:00. No food after that and water is picked up at 7:00. I take them for a short walk around my house/yard at about 10:00 pm and then I put them into their kennel when we go to bed by around 11:00. They are on my schedule. If I go to bed earlier, then I adjust. I turn on a fan right next to the kennel that makes a lot of noise, cover the kennel with a blanket and I go to bed. For the first little bit at night-time I put the kennel in a room or bathroom where nobody can hear the crying. Maybe even downstairs. In the morning I bring the kennel back into the living area.

Now of course adjust your schedule. I get my pups by about 6:30-7:00 am. When they are older and potty trained you can sleep with your dog or put their kennel in your family area.

Don’t leave the kennel in a place where they are not with the family during the day. They are pack animals and want to be with their family.. The first few nights may be a lot of crying if not off and on.

When you wake up in the morning if they didn’t have an accident PRAISE them and carry them immediately outside to the spot you want them to pee. Some say… “get busy” just be consistent with what you choose to say and do with your puppy, establishing habits that will last your puppies whole life.

  • Bedtime between 10-11 (Depending on the night)

    Awake at 6:30-7:30

  • Puppies don’t need long walks or vigorous exercise. Playing in the garden is sufficient for pups under 5 months old.

If you take your puppy out on a leash, a rule of thumb often mentioned is no more than 5 minutes walking per day for each month of his age. So that means a maximum of 25 minutes for a 5 month old puppy. This is just a guideline, to help those who aren’t sure how to exercise a puppy, it isn’t backed up by studies or evidence, but is a common sense principle that will help you avoid overdoing it.

  • One study has shown that puppies climbing stairs at an early age were more likely to develop hip dysplasia. So it is a sensible precaution to carry your small puppy up and down stairs.

Most experts recommend you don’t teach or encourage dogs to jump until they have stopped growing and this seems sensible. (Try not to have them jump out of a truck or car)

  • We use the Chris Christensen Big G Slicker.

It has long pins that penetrate deep into their thicker long coat. The pins and cushion are flexible and help combat tough tangles and mats.

I also love the Chris Christensen Metal comb. It is fantastic for keeping the hair untangled and reduces matting when you are brushing and combing regularly.

  • Everyday.

I brush at the end of the day when I'm watching tv. Make sure you thoroughly brush the backs of the legs, armpits, and behind the ears.

  • Yes.

You can use any kind of toothbrush, it doesn't need to be a dog toothbrush.

We use a small glass with half Listerine and half water and dip the toothbrush. Listerine will actually freshen the breath better than most dog toothpaste.

  • I don't.

I prefer to teach my puppies to be confident riding in the car without being crated. I don’t allow them to run back and forth and be wild. I teach them to remain in one seat or on the floorboard.

I purchase the Kurgo Car Buckles at Petco or on Amazon. They are $15-$20 and attach to your dogs leash or harness and buckle into the seatbelt clicker.

Sometimes a dog or puppy who hasn’t been trained to ride in the car will not feel secure simply sitting in the seat. I have been known to add a firm dog bed with an outside ridge to my back seat with a seatbelt tether. The dog bed has helped them feel more secure, and like they are not going to slide around. All of which leads to a more confident puppy and a more confident dog.

Car rides are super important to us as a family as we like to travel a lot. We love to visit the mountains, run errands together and take family trips. Having a confident pup in the vehicle is super important to our lifestyle!

  • Yes, mental stimulation is huge!

Puppy puzzles, snuffle mats, or playing hide and go seek are all fun ways to work the brain.

Anytime a puppy or dog is using it’s nose, it is using more energy. It’s amazing for stimulation and reducing periods of boredom.

Bored puppies and dogs can get destructive. That doesn’t help them or you. Then you are frustrated and they don’t understand why.

  • The Guardian Program is only for puppies who we have selected out of a litter, and occasionally open up as an option. These pups are pick of the litter pups and are a great way to get a healthy, amazing and beautiful dog with minimal cost.

It is not for the puppies that we have ready for forever homes. The Guardian Home Program is a special program.

At Hollow Hill Doodles, all our breeding dogs live in our home as members of our family OR they live in the homes of some very special families called Guardians with no more than 1 other dog. When mother dogs come to stay with us, she will get home-raised mother and puppy pampering. This ensures high quality care, sanitation, and socialization.

The Guardian Program was designed with the well being of the breeding dogs in mind. We, as breeders, can expand our breeding program to a size that allows for us to plan our litters carefully, import champion lines, and dedicate many hours of experience and training to our program, unlike occasional hobby breeders. We do not, however, have to house numerous dogs in kennels or outside dog runs like larger, commercial breeders do. We believe that this is a wonderful and very ethical practice of breeding. Some large breeders have kenneled dogs that suffer from being unsocialized, neglected, endure dirty conditions, develop bad habits and don't bond with their owners.

The Guardian Home program allows breeders like ourselves to keep an active breeding program without raising dogs in kennels. This program also allows breeding dogs to live in FOREVER homes with a family instead of being rehomed at the end of their breeding careers. Large breeders often do not have any other option than to rehome their dogs at older ages, which often results in compromising homes, and can become rescue situations.

At Hollow Hill Doodles, Guardians get what we consider to be the very best of the best at no cost to the Guardian Family. We only add the highest quality puppies to our bloodline as breeders. We look for the puppy who has all the best qualities and health testing the breed has to offer and we can proudly call a Hollow Hill Doodle Breeding Dog. The Guardian gets to take part in the advancement of a bloodline which can be exciting and also very emotionally rewarding. We also invest a tremendous amount of time and effort to obtain the best knowledge of whelping and breeding, with specific puppy and momma care for the breed.

Guardian dogs are raised just like you would raise and socialize any other puppy to adulthood with just a few extra precautions, for example, keeping them away from unneutered males while they're in season. Once the female Guardian Dog is mature (2 years and all the health testing is completed), Hollow Hill Doodles will evaluate her for breeding to a stud of our choosing. Bred females stay with their Guardian Family for 55 days of pregnancy then at day 56 will come to stay with us to get situated and adjust to our family/routine before whelping their litter. We will be at their side to help them whelp (give birth) and they will continue to stay with us as part of our family to raise their puppies. We make sure they're given lots of affection, good nutrition, grooming, and veterinary care while they're in our care. We'd also love for you to come and visit once the puppies are 3-4 weeks of age. Don’t worry, you’ll get lots of picture and video updates!

Each guardian dog contract agrees to a limited number of litters (between 3-5). Once the contract is completed they are retired from breeding, spayed at our expense and get to live out the rest of their long and healthy life with their loving families.

    Males

If your Guardian Dog is a male, we ask that you live within 1 hour of my home in Caldwell, ID. We ask that you keep him from breeding females in heat, keep him intact, and allow us to take him when requested, in most cases with a 24 hour notice, but please keep in mind some situations arise where same day access may be required. We breed him up to the age of 8, and then mandatory neuter at our expense.

What Are The Requirements to Become A Guardian Home?

To be considered as a Guardian Home for one of our breeding dogs, we require you:

    * Live within an approximate 90 minute drive of our home in Caldwell, ID

*Have physical 6 foot fencing to provide a safe and secure environment.

    * Own your home.

    *Have prior dog experience.

*Do not have more than 1 dog in the home currently.

•Be willing to provide transportation for Guardian Dog to the vet between 8-6 when requested or make arrangements with Laura prior. Keep Communication lines open and we are golden!

•Really want a Doodle or Poodle!

•Easy to work with and flexible.

*Teach dog basic manners and obedience commands. Manners are important and a dog thrives in pleasing us. I would love for you to take pup/dog through a few obedience classes. It makes you and your family happier and it makes it easier for me when they are here with their puppies. Most importantly, it makes for a happier dog because they are animals that want to please. They don’t naturally want to do bad things or get in trouble.

Most Importantly-Love this dog as family. These dogs are my #1 priority with my family. It's extremely important to me that they are with a family that loves and adores them and will give them the love and attention that they thrive on. If for some reason you ever become unhappy, please talk to me and we will find a solution that works for both you, me, and especially for the dog. I love these dogs with all my heart. You Must understand that if you are unable to fulfill the contract, or you must rehome the dog at Any time during their life, they Must be returned to Laura Harris.

    So How Does it Work?

Almost all of our dogs available for our Guardian Program will be females. When the Guardian dog is in season, the Guardian Family is required to contact us at the first sign of heat (bright red blood.) A female usually has a heat cycle that will last between 14 and 21 days. During this time, we will need daytime access to her for breeding related appointments. Once she has been bred, she will remain with her Guardian Family until day 55, (one week before her due date). At that time, the Guardian dog will come through the end of her pregnancy, and will be returned once her pups are fully weaned at approximately 8 weeks of age. Guardian Families are welcomed and encouraged to visit Guardian Dog and puppies, after puppies are 3-4 weeks old.

Our guardians are responsible for the dog’s regular health maintenance: vaccines, regular grooming, food, etc. All non breeding related fees. We pay for all breeding related expenses. Once the dog has arrived at breeding age and met requirements, she/he is added to our breeding program. We reserve the right to make all breeding and whelping related decisions.

We have very special relationships with our Guardian Families. They receive special perks from us as well as friendship. We have developed a high trust level with our Guardian Homes, who are amazing families.

As a Guardian family, I consider you to be a part of my family. It takes a village!

  • Conditioning your new puppy and dog to grooming is essential. There are many groomers out there not willing to take new doodle clients because owners have not been properly educated in maintaining their non shedding coat.

Buyers get an adorable fluffy puppy and are not taught the proper techniques in brushing and care of that adorable fluffy puppy.

I am currently updating this portion and will have lots of important tips and tricks for you!

One of the brands that I use and follow on social media is “PUPWELL”. They do some amazing videos that have helped me a ton!

Also make sure when you bathe your puppy, that you are also blow drying. Not blow dying all that hair will results in what groomers call “Wet Matts”.

Adopting a dog as a companion in your home can be so rewarding and wonderful and/or it can be a source of stress.  What you do with your new puppy in the beginning stages of his/her life will determine how he/she will behave as an adult.  Really, what you are doing is training yourself as much as training a dog.  I am sharing what has worked for our family.  This is just a guide, and I am sure you will adjust things to make them work for your home.

If this is your first dog, you may be feeling all sorts of anxiety. I am here to help! Perhaps you have owned many dogs, grown up with dogs, or just lost your beloved canine companion. Life is ever changing and with that brings new opportunities to love and open our hearts. Dogs have a way to our soul that is so bizarrely amazing to me. I am so grateful for the opportunity to open up my world to you. These dogs are incredible and continue to teach me on a daily basis. They allow me to grown and feel in ways that I didn’t necessarily think was possible.

I truly hope this is an amazing experience for you and your family!  There are so many amazing benefits to having a dog.  Studies show that petting and bonding with a dog can lower blood pressure and release oxytocin, the feel good hormone.  It can calm anxiety and help with depression.  Dog ownership gives your children a great sense of responsibility.  They get to see how hard work pays off.  Do not do a ton of teasing while they are young.  Spend more time loving and being sweet with your puppy.  I also never chase my dogs.  I teach them to come and reward them with treats when they do.  You do not want a dog that bolts.

Dogs feel everything.  They will feel when you are sad or happy.  They only want to please you.  Please be kind and loving and take good care of your new puppy and PLEASE PLEASE send me pictures and updates as they grow!!!

It isn’t an accident you have this new family member, they have been waiting their whole lives to meet you!!

Much Love and Welcome to my Family!

Laura :-)
