Honesty and Education
Let’s Talk About Puppy Sizes – The Truth About Predicting Weight
I saw a post this morning about a sweet Doodle named Max, who grew to 53 pounds even though his parents were just 28 and 26 pounds. The comment was, “The breeder obviously lied to us about how big he’d get.”
Here’s the thing: this isn’t about dishonesty—it’s about genetics.
When it comes to mixed breeds like Doodles, predicting adult size isn’t an exact science. Even with small parents, puppies can grow much larger than expected. Why? Because genetics pull from both the parents AND generations beyond them.
If there’s a 70–80 lb Golden Retriever or Bernese Mountain Dog in the family tree (grandparent or great-grandparent), that size potential can show up, even if the parents are smaller. It’s not about guessing wrong—it’s about Mother Nature doing her thing.
As a breeder, my job isn’t just to provide healthy, well-tempered puppies—it’s to educate you. I’ll always do my best to give you an educated estimate based on current weights and growth patterns, but I’ll never promise an exact adult size. That would be unfair to both you and your puppy.
When you’re choosing a puppy, I want to get to know you—your lifestyle, your needs, your hopes—so I can give you the information you need to make the most informed decision.
Healthy puppies. Great temperaments. And real, honest education. That’s my promise.
